Olive oil, popularly know as liquid gold, has been serving purpose since the time of Cleopatra, working wonders in homes, our skin, and of course our hair, little wonder it is also known as anointing oil in Nigeria (lol). Being one of my favourite oils in the world, you’ll be seeing a lot DIYs which include it. If you didn’t know about the benefits of olive oil on hair or you did but didn’t know that it had so many amazing benefits before now, then it’s not too late. So let’s cut to the chase, shall we?
Cure for hair loss:
Olive oil can be used as a natural hair treatment to prevent and even cure hair loss. The application of Olive oil on the scalp hinders the production of a hormone called DHT (Dihydrotestosterone) which is responsible for the shrinkage of hair follicle shaft leading to hair loss.
Treatment for Itchy scalp, dandruff and lice:
Its antibacterial, antifungal, and anti inflammatory properties make it effective in treating itchy scalp, dandruff and lice. To kill lice, follow the directions for using olive oil as a deep conditioning treatment, leaving the oil on the hair for at least 30 minutes, then repeating the treatment every ten days for a month.
Natural Conditioner :
Oils do not add moisture to hair but penetrating oils such as Olive oil do function as moisturizers in the sense that it aids the hair in retaining or maintaining moisture from water therefore leaving the hair stronger and healthier. Try this DIY Honey and Olive oil Deep conditioning recipe
Improves the health of the scalp:
Its antioxidant property helps unclog any blocked oil glands in the scalp, stimulates the hair follicles, and help promote a healthy environment for new, healthy hair growth.
Improves blood circulation and triggers new growth:
When massaged into the scalp, it improves blood circulation and triggers new growth.
When the weather is dry applying a little olive oil on hair can help smooth away splits and tame frizzy flyaways by adding weight and moisture to the hair, and is also ideal as a quick fix.
It reduces buildup from environmental contaminants and large synthetic hair care products that leave your hair dull and brittle.
Makes hair manageable:
Olive oil is the solution to dry, undernourished hair because it nourishes the hair and makes it shine with less effort.
Protects and seals:
Rich in vitamins A, E and antioxidants, olive oil helps protect the keratin in hair and seals in moisture. Applying olive oil to moisturized hair prevents the moisture from evaporating.
Detangles hair :
If your hair is a tangled mess apply olive oil to it, then patiently comb the tangles right out of it. Olive oil can also be added to commercial detangler to give it that extra slip.
Other benefits of Olive oil for hair include
Prevent prematurely gray hair, boost commercial conditioner and enhance the beauty of black hair
because EVOO contains pigments, using it in your hair will gradually darken it and when hair care products such as conditioners are combined with olive oil it enhances and improves the product and makes it spread more evenly through hair.
However, when buying Olive oil make sure it is Cold Pressed Extra Virgin Olive oil as there are many variants in the market and they don’t all give these benefits due to the different processes of extraction.
